Medically there are different stages of cellulite growth. In the first or initial stages of cellulite there are no clinical symptoms but histopathology can identify the underlying anatomical changes.

The cellulite growth reaches the second stage when the skin has a lower temperature and decreased elasticity after muscular contraction or compression. Even at this stage there is no visible “orange peel” roughness to the skin but added anatomical changes can be identified with the help of histopathology.

The orange peel and roughness to the cellulite effected area is visible only when it reaches the third stage which is also known as the “canonical” grade of cellulite. The small granulations in the deep levels of the skin can be shown by palpitation.

In the fourth stage of cellulite grown you can easily find all the three above mentioned signs and in addition it becomes more visible, palpable, and painful lumps present which remain to deep structures in the skin.

Even though some men may get cellulite but 90-98% of cellulite cases occur in women.

One of the main reasons why cellulite is rarely seen in men is due to the fact that the epidermis, dermis and uppermost part of the subcutaneous tissue is different in males.

Compared to women the men in general men have thicker epidermis and dermis tissue layers in the thighs and buttocks.

More distinctively dissimilar, the first layer of fat, which is slightly thinner in men, is assembled into polygonal units separated by crisscrossing connective tissue. The differences in subcutaneous fat cell structure in men and women occur during the third trimester of fetus development and are manifested at birth.

The difference in hormones between men & women largely explains this skin structure deviation. It is also seen that those men who are born deficient in male hormones will have a subcutaneous fat appearance similar to females.

The term ‘cellulite’ originated from the French medical literature more than 150 years ago. Originally cellulite was considered as a disease.

But with lots of research and studies in this area this theory was disapproved later.

According to the latest research in this field it is identified that there are basically two types of cellulite, one is hard cellulite and the other is soft cellulite. The hard cellulite is attached or related to the muscle this means overall that the skin does not give a saggy appearance.

The soft cellulite on the other hand is not related directly to the muscle and hence it does give the appearance that the skin is sagging and so this is very visible to the naked eye.

The hard cellulite it is much more difficult to remove, since in this case cellulite is attached directly to the muscle, so it is very difficult to actually see.

But the soft cellulite on the other hand is much easier to remove compared to hard cellulite.
